Having already spent 20 years in the business working for other companies, Gene Steneck was ready to venture onto his own at the advice of his wife, Deborah. With his knowledge of the industry and her financial savvy, they started the company. Things started out slowly at first — a job here, a job there. As the company’s client list continued to grow, there was also a need for more people.

Gene and Deborah chose the right people. The growth of the company is evidence of that. Automatic Door Systems grew from one truck to a fleet of trucks servicing Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and parts of New York.

“We sell and service automatic doors for supermarkets, hospitals, commercial office buildings, universities and many other facility types,” says Gene Steneck, vice president of the company. “An old boss of mine used to say that he wanted every house and every business to have an automatic door. At the time, the cost for doing this was too exorbitant. Now the costs have come down so much that I can see this happening. Credit is easy and prices are good. It’s coming to fruition where everyone can afford an automatic door. The manufacturers we deal with can manufacture a terrific unit at a great price.”

Another benefit with Automatic Door Systems is its versatility and concern for the client. “We have the equipment to fix existing doors for the primary manufacturers in the industry, not just the ones we sell,” says Steneck. “And I don’t use  unproven, ‘generic’ parts. I buy the original equipment and whatever I remove is the exact type of part I reinstall.”

There’s a lot more to automatic doors than just repairs. Automatic Door Systems is the place to go for new construction, additions or renovations. The company’s experience pays off time and again for clients with these types of projects. “When the client contacts us, he or she has some kind of an idea of what he or she wants,” says Steneck. “Our expertise guides us to tell the client why he or she can use a particular product, and the benefits to it, rather than why he or she can’t or shouldn’t use it. We do this because once we start talking about why it can’t be used, the client doesn’t want to do it. Nobody likes having his or her ideas turned down. So, we try to provide clients with the benefits to their choices, or find products that would better suit their needs.”
Automatic Door Systems is not the biggest in the industry, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the most capable. The company’s traits have proven effective, which is why it has been successful despite the competition. The company’s size allows for more personal attention to be given to clients. The family-like atmosphere means an increased likelihood of the same personnel being there years later. A low turnover rate is always beneficial to clients because a relationship has already been established, and they don’t have to start over with a new contact each time.

“Ours is a specialty product,” says Steneck. “If you’re small — and you stay small — then sooner or later you’ll get swallowed up by other large firms. My family here is a success because we’ve been around for 15 years and not just survived, but grown. This isn’t a business where you can just load up a car with equipment and go out and service customers. In this industry you have to know everyone’s product and manufacturer so you don’t end up out of business. Our knowledge and experience is our best asset.”
